Still no end in sight for the inquiry into the collapse of Rover, which has now been running for over two and a half years, at a cost of £11 million (with £100,000 on hotels alone).

Truly what a farce and a tragic one for Longbridge. It is not even, in October 2008, clear what will have been achieved. Instead of ripping down sheds and dreaming of riverside education campuses, what about some jobs. Even toy jobs (subsidised) to create wind turbines or to repair things. One committee asked about putting the railway line back to Frankley – but it turns out that the protection was not very good and some houses were built close to the old line. They tried to come up with a cost to have a line anyway but they asked Network Rail’s train capacity clerk, not a civil engineer. Wiping the complimentary vol-au-vent crumbs from his mouth, he guessed at £20m. So that out then.
